To record a wall before it vanishes. For that quiet practice, we designed a single place that simply stands — without ornament.
For a practice of recording, a place that remembers.
Her work is to stand before architecture about to be destroyed, and to copy its surface. "I arrive before the machine." The record of disappearance sits at the core of the practice.
What was asked for was not a site that makes the work look glamorous. Quite the opposite. For work whose subject is loss and silence, a place that holds the same temperature of stillness. Not the even grid of a gallery, but each work rising, one at a time, within negative space — the very interval an exhibition space holds, re-set inside the time of a scroll. That was the single thing this place was asked to carry.
Design is not the decoration of a surface; it is the engineering of an invisible temperature. Here we keep, one by one, the decisions made for this place.
-
Bend the screen to the stillness of the work.
Monochrome ink sinking into a translucent surface — the screen must not disturb that texture. Built from black, light and negative space alone, with no ornament. Before the work speaks, the space does.
-
Show through negative space, not a grid.
We abandoned the evenly spaced thumbnail grid and placed each work, one at a time, within wide margins. As an installation is set into space, the screen too gives the work its interval.
-
Let motion move at the speed of disappearing.
In sync with the scroll, the work surfaces without a sound. Fast, showy motion would betray a subject of vanishing. We decide the reason for motion from the subject itself.
-
Set the words with the same strength as the work.
"What walls remember" — her words are treated not as captions but as inscriptions. Set large, cut quietly into the negative space.
Design that silences, over design that shows.
What a work does not contain shapes its bearing as much as what it does. Because the subject is loss, we leave visible the places where we deliberately stopped our hand.
An even thumbnail gridThe work is not ornament to be tiled. Each is placed, one at a time, within negative space. Not filling is part of the design.Bright colour and spectacleBrightness and clamour betray the stillness of this work. We hold monochrome to the very end.Excess motionThe more motion, the thinner the silence. We move only the one place that must move.
It opens almost in silence — a single place. With each scroll the work rises slowly, then returns into the negative space. Her words are set in the corner of the screen like an inscription. Neither lavish nor loud — only the posture of standing quietly before what is disappearing lives in every corner.
That the work and the site breathe at the same temperature. That was the achievement of this work.
Figures such as traffic or inquiries are not placed in this column. That the stillness never broke, to the very end — that single point is what we consider the achievement of this work.
