The Japanese line-break test

The number is the count of visual lines that begin with a character Japanese typesetting does not allow at the head of a line. It is measured from the rendered line boxes in your browser — not asserted by us. Drag the column width and watch it move.

Three rules, none of which appear on anybody's checklist

• KinsokuA line may not begin with 。、）」』〕】！？ー々, and may not end with （「『〔【. The left pane lets the browser break anywhere, which is what a template does when it is told to prevent overflow. The right pane keeps the forbidden pairs together.
• AkiA quarter of an em belongs between a Japanese character and a Latin one — between 日本語 and Framer. Without it the two scripts touch, and the sentence reads as if it were pasted rather than set.
• PaltJapanese punctuation is drawn inside a full square, so a comma followed by a bracket opens a hole the width of a character. Proportional spacing closes it. The right pane has it on; the left does not.

There is a fourth, furigana — the small reading printed above a name — which has no equivalent anywhere in Framer or in plain CSS, and which every Japanese brand needs the moment a founder's name appears.
